MEDIA STATEMENT 28 July 2024 DES COLLINS’ REACTION TO NEWS OF POTENTIAL INFECTED BLOOD CRIMINAL PROSECUTIONS

Further to The Sunday Times story today, Des Collins, senior partner of Collins Solicitors and adviser to 1500 victims of the infected blood scandal, of whom over 50 former pupils were in the care of Treloar’s School, said:

“We have long argued that Treloar’s School was grossly negligent in its guinea-pig treatment of haemophiliac pupils in the 70s and 80s. Based on the evidence heard during the Infected Blood Inquiry, we filed an application for a Group Litigation Order (GLO) against the Treloar’s Trust in 2022, as it was clear to us that the so-called Treloar’s boys have a specific claim to bring. The school effectively acted in loco-parentis when it failed to secure proper consent from pupils’ parents for the treatment their children received.

“Undoubtedly this amounts to a breach of duty of care, and the Inquiry’s findings uphold the view we have taken throughout.

“We support these former pupils and their families as they seek both answers as well as compensation for the life-long injuries they have suffered.
“We look forward to seeing the results of the National Police Chiefs’ Council review into the Infected Blood Inquiry’s findings and urge the Home Secretary to intervene thereafter without delay.”
