What are Mediation services?

‘Problems are best solved when people talk’

Mediation is a process which helps couples who have decided to separate or divorce to talk things through with an independent and neutral facilitator.

The benefits:

Mediation has very real benefits:

  • Empowers couples to make their own decision
  • Keeps channels of communication open
  • Deals with all issues on relationship breakdown
  • Reduces hostility and minimises distress
  • Saves the costs of expensive court battles

The fundamentals

  • Neutral facilitator: Our mediator will meet with both spouses/partners to support them to find solutions in a calm environment, where they will have the opportunity to have their views heard.
  • Confidential: the process is completely confidential. With few exceptions nothing that is shared in mediation can be disclosed to anyone, and none of the discussions and negotiations can be referred to in legal proceedings.
  • Voluntary: individuals engage in the process because they want to.
  • Information: our specialist lawyer mediator can provide a wealth of information, including legal information to help parties reach decisions about arrangements for their children, and about their financial options
  • Documentation: The proposals that are reached in mediation will be fully documented, so that the parties will have a complete record for future reference.

The Mediation process works like this

We will consider with you whether mediation is the right option for you and your spouse/partner, and you will be asked to complete a simple information form.

There will be a series of meetings at which you set the agenda to discuss the issues that are important to you. Most people require between 3 – 6 sessions of about 1 - 2 hours.

During the process you can consult with your own lawyer for legal advice on the issues that are raised in mediation

At the end of the process we will provide you with a summary of the proposals that you reach and details of your financial information.

How much does it cost?

Mediation is very cost effective:

Mediation is possibly the most cost effective method of resolving disputes following relationship breakdown. We offer a fixed fee initial appointment, at which you can discuss whether mediation is suitable for you. Our charges for this meeting are 125.00 plus VAT. If you decide to proceed with mediation our normal hourly rate for mediation is 125.00 plus VAT for each person per hour. We offer a reduced fee for people on incomes below 30,000 of 100.00 per hour plus VAT.

There may be additional charges if we need to obtain other expert advice or valuations.
